Is the Interior Painting
Business Profitable?
Many times when someone is going into the house
painting business, they consider targeting one specific type of
painting. Many have found success in the Interior Painting
business.
By doing just interior painting you are
actually making a wise decision. The first benefit is you will
be less effected by local weather and will require less
equipment in most cases. While exterior painting usually
requires tools such as power washers, extension ladders and
scaffolding, in most cases you will not need anywhere near the
equipment needed for exterior work.
Another secret is interior painting is a lot less stressful
on your body. While this doesn't mean much when we're young, as
the years go by, handling those extension ladders can prove to
be a workout. Many of my associates have moved
into interior work when they get into their 50's. So we
can probably say that the interior painting business is
healthier in the long run.
Another good point is that interior work is more profitable
also. There are two types of painting to consider and that is
new construction and re-paints of older homes. From my personal
experience and that of my long time associates, re-paints are
the way to go.
The negative side to repainting older homes is of course you
have to work around the home's furnishings and deal with the
home owners. This calls for more care and preparation time but
of course this is reflected in your billing. I've known guys
who like just charging a flat rate such as $300 to $600 per
room depending upon the size and detailing. But I also know
some who have become very well known custom painters and earn a
good six figures year after year by just doing custom interior
work.
It is a good idea to focus on interior painting if you like
dealing with home owners and want to work all year long.
You will find nothing more profitable than the interior
painting business serving residential clients. After a
few years of good reports you'll find a growing client base
which might be expanded to include real estate agents and
investors. You'll find additional information on building
that client base in our house painting business plan.
